What he is trying to say in that statement is that people need those things . They need food just to survive. we also need shelter because if we don't we would be exposed to the blizzards and ice storms that happen all the time in the north east. Lastly we need clothing and fuel. We need those to survive the last two help provide warmth with in our shelter that we eat in.
We do not need computers and phones and toys and all those other things that people think that they need. People think that they can not live with out those things. I will admit that these make our lives a heck of a lot easier, but do we really need email or do we need to have games that we can play on our phones when we are bored. Think about it how did people survive with out electricity 150 years ago, they would sen mail instead of email and they would not stay up as late watching TV and would sleep better on account of that. If the world lost all power for one day, this include batteries cell phones Ipads and computer. Also it would mean no power for TVs or electric lights for one day. People would go insane. They would walk in to a bathroom that is in a build and has no windows close the door and reach for the switch but forget that it was not working. They would be stuck in their with out light. People would not be able to plan picking up their kids after school as well because if a plan changed there would be no way to tell other people or your kid if they were getting picked up by some one else or not. Which would result in people having to plan further ahead.
